In Studio City, California, residents of an apartment complex on the 4200 block of Longridge Avenue, fed up with repeated mail thefts, confronted a suspected thief on August 6, 2025, leading to a violent altercation. The suspect, believed to have targeted multiple buildings in the area, was caught on surveillance footage using a master key to steal mail. Frustrated by weeks of thefts and perceived inaction from police, tenants took matters into their own hands.
Around 11 p.m., residents spotted the suspect, recognizable from prior footage and neighborhood watch alerts, wearing the same clothes and carrying a duffel bag. When confronted, the situation escalated. Resident Timothy Brehmer attempted to record the suspect, who swatted at his phone. Brehmer pepper-sprayed the man, who then allegedly pulled a knife, causing minor injuries. To prevent escape, Brehmer smashed the suspect’s Jeep windshield with a baseball bat, and others flattened the tires. The suspect fled on an electric scooter before police arrived at 11:13 p.m., leaving his damaged vehicle behind.
Residents reported the suspect had hit their complex up to five times, prompting them to post flyers with his image. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to the call but found the suspect gone. Authorities have not confirmed the suspect’s identity or recovered a knife, and he remains at large. The LAPD urged anyone with information to contact the Van Nuys Division at 818-374-1964.
This incident highlights a broader issue of mail theft in Southern California, often linked to identity theft and fraud. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service notes an 87% rise in high-volume mailbox thefts from 2019 to 2022, with thieves targeting “arrow keys” for access. Residents, feeling unprotected, expressed frustration with law enforcement’s response, citing delays and dismissals of “petty” complaints.
