Brazilian opposition formally launches impeachment against Judge Alexandre de Moraes

In a pivotal development in Brazilian politics, opposition lawmakers have officially filed an impeachment request against Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes. This move comes after months of escalating tensions between the judiciary and conservative sectors of Congress, with accusations ranging from political censorship to judicial abuse of power.

Justice de Moraes has become a lightning rod for controversy since the final years of Jair Bolsonaro's presidency. He has spearheaded investigations widely criticized for overstepping constitutional boundaries, issuing orders to block social media accounts, censor conservative voices, and detain individuals under the vague banner of “fake news”—often without formal charges.

The impeachment motion was introduced by members of the Liberal Party (PL), Bolsonaro’s political base, along with other right-leaning parties. The initiative was celebrated across Brazil’s conservative grassroots movement, which has long protested against what they call “judicial activism” used to push ideological agendas. However, the impeachment faces major roadblocks. Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco has consistently stonewalled all motions against STF justices and has yet to show any sign of allowing this one to proceed. In response, opposition lawmakers have hinted at legal action and public mobilization if Pacheco continues to obstruct the constitutional process.

“There is no democracy without checks and balances. A judge who becomes a partisan actor must be held accountable,” one lawmaker declared.

International observers are also watching closely. Many see Brazil as a testing ground for progressive authoritarianism disguised as a fight against misinformation. Critics argue that similar tactics are creeping into Western democracies where judicial overreach aims to silence traditionalist, religious, and patriotic voices.
