It is the awareness of the 'not-I'--the objects in the world that produces an awareness of the 'I'--the self or subject connected to these objects. This is the point and counterpoint of Hegel's phenomenology. It essentially shows us that the discovery of life in the world brings the awareness of death; its transcendental point is then produced as an abstract concept called the Divine.
