Henry VII Tells of Taking Back his Throne, Setting England Straight, & Give Cabot License to Explore

I was born in 1457 at Pembroke Castle during the Wars of the Roses, a fight between the Houses of Lancaster and York for the English crown. My father died before I was born, and my mother, Margaret Beaufort, raised me knowing I had a claim to the throne, though it was not the strongest. Much of my youth was spent in exile in Brittany and France, waiting for the right chance to return. That chance came in 1485, when I landed in England and defeated King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field. I married Elizabeth of York, uniting the two rival houses and creating the Tudor rose as a symbol of peace. My reign focused on restoring stability, strengthening the crown’s finances, and keeping powerful nobles in check. I avoided costly wars, preferring careful diplomacy. I also encouraged exploration, granting John Cabot permission to sail west in 1497, which led to England’s first claim in the New World. When I died in 1509, I left my son Henry VIII a peaceful and wealthy kingdom, built on the foundation I had worked tirelessly to secure.
