Kestenbaum was born in, Teaneck, New Jersey, to Daniel and Hadassah Kestenbaum, British immigrants. He is one of seven siblings and was named Shabbos because he was born on the Jewish Sabbath. "Shabbos" is a term derived from Hebrew. It is a Yiddish pronunciation of the "Ancient Hebrew" word "Shabbat," which refers to the Jewish Sabbath, a day of rest and religious observance.
