Anahata Chakra, the Thymus Gland, and our Electromagnetic Heart.
The Anahata chakra, often called the heart centre, is the fourth of the seven primary energy hubs from the Vedic teachings.
Located at the centre of the chest, the Anahata is associated with love, compassion, balance, and the subtle breath (prana) that animates all life. In yogic texts, Anahata is described as a twelve-petaled lotus flower, radiating green light and governed by the element of air—suggesting a connection to openness, movement, and the invisible currents that connect all things.
Vedic teachings emphasise that Anahata is the bridge between the lower chakras—the powerful energy centres concerned with survival, desire, and ego—and the upper chakras, which relate to the higher faculties of enhanced intuition, transcendence, and enlightenment.
It’s here that conflicting dualities dissolve: giving and receiving, self and other, inner and outer.
In this way, the heart becomes a central axis point—not only for emotional and spiritual coherence, but also for energetic protection. When the Anahata chakra is awakened, it generates a strong bioelectromagnetic field that can harmonise internal conflicts and shield us against negative external influences—be they physical (viruses and pathogens, etc) or psychological.
Modern science offers some interesting evidence.
The heart generates the most powerful electromagnetic field in the human body—up to 60 times greater in amplitude than the brain’s electrical activity. Detectable via magnetocardiography, this electromagnetic field radiates several feet beyond the body and seems to modulate emotional dynamics, social attunement, and even reflect overall health.
Closely linked to this centre is the thymus gland, nestled just behind the sternum.
In early life, the thymus plays a crucial role in immune development, training infection-fighting T cells (a type of white blood cell) to distinguish between self and non-self. Esoteric traditions echo this role, viewing the thymus as a subtle organ of transmutation where breath, emotion, and vital essence (ojas) converge.
Scientific studies have shown that thymic atrophy—the shrinking of the thymus typically seen with age—is strongly influenced by sex hormones, particularly testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone .
The thymus' proximity to the Anahata chakra and its role in discernment suggest that conserving sexual energy—through practices like semen retention—may help enhance not only immune resilience but the protective and integrative field/shield of the heart.
(Please stay tuned until the end, where some advice is given for those on the long-term path to self-mastery.)
