A Note of Gratitude

On July 19, 2025, a wildfire near Musgrave Harbour forced nearly one thousand residents to evacuate their homes. In the face of fear and uncertainty, what followed was an outpouring of support from individuals, communities, and organizations, all of whom deserve our deepest thanks.

We are sincerely grateful to the aerial firefighting crews coordinated by the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture of Newfoundland and Labrador.

For two critical days, they were joined by aircraft and water bombers from Quebec and New Brunswick, through interprovincial mutual aid agreements.

Together, these teams flew water bombing runs, coordinated with bird dog aircraft, and provided vital helicopter support that helped contain the fire and prevent further destruction.

On the ground, the Musgrave Harbour Volunteer Fire Brigade led a courageous effort to protect the town.

They were joined by volunteer firefighters from surrounding communities, including New-Wes-Valley, Lumsden, and others across the Bonavista Bay region.

Many left work in other provinces, stepped away from offshore jobs, or paused personal responsibilities to return home and help.

They slept on the fire hall floor, sharing shifts around the clock, never backing down from the task in front of them.

We also thank the Canadian Red Cross for quickly setting up reception centres and helping evacuees access shelter, food, and supplies.

The Salvation Army provided hot meals and emotional support, offering a sense of comfort in difficult times.

Businesses stepped up too, Xheight Zone in Gander welcomed children and families free of charge and even hosted a pizza party.

Rosie's Diner offered food and space to those in need, and nearby campgrounds and towns invited evacuees to bring their campers and stay at no cost.

These gestures, both large and small, meant the world to us.

Most importantly, we want to thank those who opened their homes.

Whether you were family, friends, or strangers who quickly became friends, you let us in.

You gave us beds and couches, shared your electricity, your food, and your space.

We became bumps on your couch for a week, and not once did you make us feel like a burden.

You gave us comfort, safety, and dignity when we had to leave our own homes behind.

This message is for every person who showed up, spoke up, stepped forward, or stood beside us.

Thank you for proving that when it matters most, we are never alone.
