See the Light

Sermon on Luke 11:33-36 - Lords Day August 10th, 2025 - Trinity Reformed Church

Light and darkness express spiritual realities. To express Jesus and His Word as light and failure to see His Word is darkness. Why do some hear and some do not hear? The context was insufficient responses to Jesus. This passage is a summation of that context sheds light on this passage of light. V16 they weren't testing Him they were taunting Him. It's a warning to examine ourselves. "If you can see."

His message was a bright as a burning light. But they couldn't see because of their darkened hearts. Light is of no use to a blind man.

The purpose of light: V33

Matthew 6:22-23 - same analogy but there is an emphasis on morals and greed. Matthew 5:15 so let your light shine so that men may see your good works.  Here in Luke it is Gods testimony of Jesus and His coming. His miracles, His message and His gospel Word. Jesus was not holding back light from them. We have more light and revelation than the time of Jonah. We have no excuse. Light is not our problem. That's the key why Jesus said this is such a wicked generation. They had the light of Christ but refused to repent. Psalm 19 contains general and special revelation. Psalm 36:9; 119:105, John 1:5,9. John 8:12 "I am the light of the world" - He is a blazing shining forth of Gods glory. Jesus came and made everything clear.

The perception of Light: V34

The physical eye represents the heart and light of man. Just as physical perception depends on good sight spiritual perception depends on the condition of our spiritual heart. If you can't see its not the fault of the light its the fault of your ability to see the light.

When God illuminates a mans heart then and only then can he see. The mind governed by the flesh cannot see. It's a willful blindness. Jesus holds men accountable.

The pretense of light: V35

Take heed. They think they have light but they are in darkness. This is a warning to examine yourself. If you can't see the bright light of Jesus you are in darkness. Jesus is teaching that of you don't believe Him you have no light in you. All those without the Gospel they don't think they need Jesus. The light they think that is in them is actually darkness. Romans 1 even though they knew God they did not honor Him as God... they became futile.. their hearts became darkness. Professing to be wise they became fools. All mankind not embracing the blaring light of the handy work of God in creation are in darkness. Same with false religions. Matthew 15:14 - the blind leading the blind. Matthew 13:13 - Jesus speaks in parables so that seeing they do not see and hearing they do not hear. Mathew 13:14 prophecy of Isaiah will be fulfilled.  Romans 2:19 - a guide to the blind.

The perfection of light: V36

The good news to us is we have the light. It's not impaired. It's certainty. We are sure who He is. We are not neutral or opposing Him. If someone says they aren't sure they don't have the light. We aren't grabbing on some things we like and throwing out things we don't like. We have the perfect light and sight. The completion, the wholeness, the whole body full of light. This is fully embracing the Gospel message. 2 Peter 1:19. Well to listen as a lamp shining in a dark place. Ephesians 5 walk in the light.

Closing: 1 Corinthians 2:7-16

Luke 11:33-36 (NKJV) 33 “No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts [it] in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. 34 “The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when [your eye] is bad, your body also [is] full of darkness. 35 “Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. 36 “If then your whole body [is] full of light, having no part dark, [the] whole [body] will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”
