Covenants Unified and Embodied in Christ

Sermon on God covenants - selected verses - Lords Day August 10th, 2025 - Trinity Reformed Church
Review and intro:

the heart of the covenant is in every covenant. God will dwell with His people. Reached and fulfilled in Christ. Not a tabernacle, temple but Christ. The fulfillment or all this hope and covenant promise..

Covenants:
Abrahamic:

Gen 15:3, the type is born who is Isaac. He is not the fulfillment. Gal 3:15-16 - the promise was not to Isaac but the promise to Abraham and his seed. We are reminded of the certainty of Gods covenants. The "seed" is Christ. He is the embodiment of the covenant. Abraham understood this. He looked forward to this. John 8:56, V57 Jesus says before Abraham was I am.

Mosaic:

supplemented the Abrahamic covenant. How could sinful and unholy man be Gods people? We need a mediator. This covenant reveals we need a mediator and a sacrifices. This became reality when Christ came. A man like us who did not sin, offered the perfect sacrifice and mediated for us. Paul confronts legalists. Even Moses called for people to have faith. Every covenant can be a covenant of works if we are not trusting in Christ. Judiazers were doing this in Acts and Galatians. Under the mosaic law were so that we could be made conscience of our sin. Romans 9:30-33 they made it a covenant of works. Romans 10:1 a zeal for God but haven't submitted to Christ's righteousness. It is clear man cannot achieve salvation. Only through faith in Christ.

Davidic Covenant:

2 Sam 7:12-13

"Will come from your body" Solomon was a type but he didn't fulfill this. Acts 2:30-36 The apostles are preaching fulfillment is in Christ. Acts 3:12 links up the Abrahamic, Mosaic and Davidic covenant all together. Acts 13:23, 26, 32, 40; Acts 28:23 . Rev 19:10. Isaiah 7:14, 42:6, 49:8, 55:3; Matthew 1:21.

Conclusion:

He came as a suffering servant to gather His people both Jew and Gentile. In Christ God dwells among us. He will be our God and we will be His people. To all who believe. Moses said the Lord has made a covenant with you. This is the blood of the covenant sprinkled in blood. Jesus says something different. Matthew 26:28 The blood of the new covenant in my blood. Jesus is the embodiment of the covenant. How do we enter into this covenant? We believe. Gal 3:26

Romans 9:30-32 (NKJV) 30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness of faith; 31 but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Why? Because [they did] not [seek it] by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone.

Acts 3:13 (NKJV) “The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let [Him] go.
