Hormone Reboot: How to Support Your Hormones as We Shift into Fall
#LifeEnthusiast #health #wellness
As the golden hues of summer fade and crisp autumn air rolls in, many of us notice subtle—sometimes not-so-subtle—changes in how we feel. Maybe you’re feeling extra drained, a bit more anxious, or (for the ladies) your cycle seems just a little off. If any of that resonates, you’re not imagining things: the shift from summer to fall sparks real changes in our bodies, particularly in our hormones.
Scott Paton and Martin Pytela recently dove into this timely topic on the Life Enthusiast Health Shots podcast, unpacking why these seasonal transitions can leave us feeling “off,” and—most importantly—what to do about it.
Why Do Seasons Affect Our Hormones?
As Martin explains, our bodies are closely attuned to the seasons. Daylight changes—shortening days and longer nights—can throw off our circadian rhythms, the internal clocks that regulate everything from sleep to hormone production. In the absence of as much sun, our bodies begin preparing for winter. This not only affects mood-regulating hormones like serotonin, but also adrenal and reproductive hormones, including cortisol, estrogen, and progesterone.
The Cortisol Connection
Cortisol is our primary stress hormone. As daily rhythms shift and the demands of the new season ramp up (think: back to school, holidays around the corner), we become more vulnerable to chronic stress. Your body interprets everything from poor sleep and bright screens at night to emotional stressors as cues to ramp up cortisol. The problem? If you don’t “work off” this cortisol (by, say, physical activity), your body tends to store the resulting excess glucose as belly fat.
Too much cortisol, especially in concert with disrupted sleep and shorter days, sets the stage for hormone imbalances, fatigue, and trouble with mood regulation.
Adrenal Health and What “Fatigue” Really Means
Martin highlighted that what we often call “adrenal fatigue” is really an issue with the entire hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis—the system governing your stress response. When this axis is dysregulated, you can experience lightheadedness upon standing, trouble getting going in the morning, and persistent tiredness. Remedies like herbal adaptogens and proper mineral support (especially magnesium and potassium) can help restore balance.
