In Galilee, Jesus told His disciples that He would be handed over, killed, and rise on the third day, and they were filled with grief. In Capernaum, temple tax collectors asked Peter if Jesus paid the tax, and he replied yes. Before Peter spoke to Him, Jesus asked from whom earthly kings collect taxes—subjects or foreigners. When Peter answered “foreigners,” Jesus said the sons are exempt but, to avoid offense, told him to catch a fish, where he would find a coin to pay the tax for both of them.
