Namibia is moving to position itself as a key player in the global nuclear arena, endorsing its bid to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), the body regulating the trade in nuclear technology and materials. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, in her first State of the Nation Address, also announced plans to begin discussions on building Namibia’s first nuclear power plant. The move comes as the country, rich in uranium reserves, seeks to boost energy security and reduce reliance on imports. Joining the NSG could give Namibia greater access to nuclear technology, while strengthening its influence over global non-proliferation and energy policy.
