The Housing Crisis and Rising Rents is an Obstacle Before Those Returning to Syria

After years of exile and uncertainty, tens of thousands of Syrians returned to their homes. The displaced found themselves facing a shocking reality, summed up by the escalating housing crisis and unprecedented rent hikes. The housing crisis and high rents are an obstacle facing those returning to Syria. After the fall of the Assad regime, Syrians returned home with hope, but were shocked by a painful reality. Half a million returned from abroad, whilst 1.2 million internally displaced persons returned to their villages and cities, but crisis awaited them: a stifling housing crisis and insanely high rents. Owning a home is a far off dream, whilst renting is a burden that exhausts family income. Cities are destroyed, people are unable to renovate or build, and hundreds of thousands are still in camps. Who bears responsibility for this reality? Who has the real solution? Securing housing is a right for every human. It is the obligation of the state in Islam: to provide job opportunities for everyone, invest resources for the benefit of the people, provide housing on a non-profit basis, give loans without riba (interest), grant land for free, revive barren land, grant free real estate consultations, preventing the hoarding of empty houses, temporary housing units for the most needy. However, instead of working to help people in reconstruction, we see the imposition of taxes on building materials, which leads to an increase in their prices, despite the Shariah ruling prohibiting taking illegal taxes. As for the public property of oil, gas and phosphates, they are exploited by foreign and Western companies, and sold for many decades, without the people having any share within them, at a time when they are in dire need of them for construction and reconstruction of destroyed residences. The solution does not lie in importing the financial systems of the West. It only lies in implementing Islam and its treatments in governance, economics and all aspects of life. The solution is the Islamic economic system.
