PaRappa the Rapper is a rhythm video game developed by NanaOn-Sha and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation. It was originally released in Japan in 1996 and worldwide in 1997, created by music producer Masaya Matsuura in collaboration with artist Rodney Greenblat.
The game is considered the first true rhythm game and features unique visual design and rap-based gameplay.
The player controls PaRappa, a paper-thin rapping dog, who must make his way through six stages by rapping in time with the music.
As the teacher raps, a bar at the top of the screen displays symbols that the player must match by pressing the correct buttons at the right time, raising a "u rappin' cool meter" to progress.
PaRappa is in love with his girlfriend, Sunny Funny, and his adventures often involve overcoming difficult situations, typically countered with his catchphrase, "I gotta believe!".

The game has a significant legacy, being the progenitor of a genre that includes titles like Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution, Beat Saber, and Necrodancer.
A remastered version was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2017 for the game's twentieth anniversary.
The original game was also ported to the PlayStation Portable in 2006.
A 20th-anniversary remaster for the PS4 was released, though it was criticized for being harder due to introduced lag frames.

A Japanese anime television series based on the game, also titled PaRappa the Rapper, aired on Fuji TV between April 2001 and January 2002, running for thirty episodes.
The series, which is a prequel to the video game series, focuses on PaRappa and his friends, including PJ Berri, Katy Kat, and Sunny Funny, and introduces new characters like Paula Fox, Pinto (PaRappa's little sister), and the villainous duo Gaster and Groober.
The series was produced by Fuji Television and SME Visual Works, animated by J.C.Staff, and created by Masaya Matsuura and Rodney Alan Greenblat.
The soundtrack was composed by Masaya Matsuura, Yoshihisa Suzuki, and Yasushi Kurobane.
