Undocumented Suspect Accused in CBP Agent Shooting in New York Also Tied to Armed Robbery in Massachusetts

Two undocumented men are in custody after allegedly shooting an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer during a robbery attempt in New York City—and federal officials say one of them is also tied to a violent armed robbery in Massachusetts.

The shooting occurred just before midnight Saturday in a park beneath the George Washington Bridge. According to NYPD, two men pulled up on a moped and approached the off-duty officer, who was sitting with a woman. When one suspect tried to rob him, the officer drew his service weapon and exchanged gunfire. He was shot in the face and arm, while one suspect was also injured before fleeing the scene.

Authorities later linked the suspects to a February robbery at Sam and Friends Pawn Shop in Leominster, MA. Surveillance footage showed two men tying up the owner with duct tape and attempting to shoot him—though the gun misfired. They escaped with cash, guns, and jewelry. A fingerprint left at the scene identified one of the suspects as Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, a Dominican national who entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and was later arrested in New York for other violent crimes.

The pawn shop owner confirmed Nunez’s identity when shown a mugshot. Both suspects are now in custody.

Federal officials blamed sanctuary city policies, calling them a danger to public safety. “Sanctuary cities are sanctuaries for criminals,” said U.S. Border Czar Thomas Homan. President Trump also weighed in, praising the officer's bravery and pointing to the shooting as a failure of Democratic immigration policy.
