Four Revolutions - Milestones - That Shaped the West. 1. No Church, 2. No Christ, 3. No God, 4. No Man?
I explore here St Augustine: The City of God vs. the City of Man, and a possible History’s March Toward a Post-Human Future.
In "The City of God", St. Augustine describes human history as a conflict between two loves: the love of God that builds the City of God, and the love of Self that builds the City of Man. This vision has echoed through centuries of Western history. In this video, we trace four decisive moments in that story:
1. The Protestant Reformation – rejection of the Catholic Church’s authority, Sacraments, Eucharist, individual interpretation of Christian doctrine, etc. but continued faith in God and Christ.
2. The French Revolution – rejection of both Church and Christ, yet belief in an impersonal, deistic entity - 'Architect of the Universe'.
3. The Bolshevik Revolution – rejection of all transcendence: no Church, no Christ, no God.
4. Our Present Age – No Man? - the emergence of a post-human vision, where even humanity itself is seen as provisional.
Looking at this from St. Augustine’s lens, these moments are not just political events but milestones in the West’s spiritual transformation.
