The story begins with a storm causing a Universal Dynamics cargo ship to lose six ROZZUM robots, with only Unit 7134 surviving and washing ashore on an uninhabited island. Accidentally activated by wildlife, "Roz" is initially perceived as a monster by frightened animals. Despite her attempts to help and her ability to communicate with all creatures, she injures herself. Unable to find anyone requiring her services, she signals for retrieval. However, a lightning strike and an animal attack lead her to accidentally crush a goose nest, leaving only one egg [1].

Roz protects the sole surviving egg from a hungry red fox named Fink. A gosling hatches and imprints on Roz, inadvertently breaking her long-range transponder. Pinktail, a mother opossum, entrusts Roz with the task of caring for the gosling, ensuring he learns to fly, swim, and eat independently before winter migration. Fink, realizing the benefits of Roz's presence, helps her build a shelter. Roz names the gosling Brightbill, and the three form an unconventional family. As Brightbill grows, he faces rejection from other geese and, upon discovering Roz's accidental role in his family's demise, feels betrayed and disowns her [1].

In her distress, Roz reconstructs another ROZZUM unit, 6262, nicknamed "Rummage," seeking advice. Rummage gives Roz her transponder, suggesting she return to the Universal Dynamics factory. Roz enlists the help of Thunderbolt, a falcon, to teach Brightbill to fly, and receives guidance from Longneck, a leader of the geese migration. Brightbill masters flying just in time for the migration. Missing Brightbill and questioning her purpose, Roz reactivates her transponder but immediately shuts it off after Universal Dynamics detects her signal [1].

During the migration, a thunderstorm forces the geese into a Universal Dynamics greenhouse, triggering a contamination alert that dispatches reconnaissance (RECO) robots. Longneck sacrifices himself to allow Brightbill to lead the flock to safety. Meanwhile, Roz and Fink save the island's animals during a severe snowstorm, urging them to a truce before Roz powers down. Spring arrives, and Roz reawakens to find the animals maintaining their truce and Brightbill returning as a hero [1].

Shortly after, a Universal Dynamics dropship, captained by a Virtual Observational Neutralizing Troublesome Retrieval Authority ("Vontra") robot, arrives to retrieve Roz. Roz flees with Fink, pursued by RECO robots. The animals unite to fight the RECOs, but Vontra detonates the damaged RECOs, incapacitating and capturing Roz, and starting a forest fire. The geese and Thunderbolt attack the dropship, allowing Brightbill to save Roz as Fink and others extinguish the fire. Despite appearing shut down by Vontra, Roz's love for Brightbill restores her systems. She destroys Vontra and evacuates Brightbill as the dropship explodes [1].

Roz decides to return to Universal Dynamics to protect the island from future attacks, promising to return. The animals continue to live together on the island while Roz works at another Universal Dynamics greenhouse, retaining her memories. Brightbill visits her, and they embrace
