Trump Triggers Backlash For Confusing Russia and Alaska Ahead of Putin Meet |Firstpost America|N18G

US President Donald Trump caused a social media storm after mistakenly saying Alaska is part of Russia during a press conference. The geographical slip-up, repeated more than once, sparked widespread mockery online. Alaska was once Russian territory but was sold to the United States in 1867 for $7.2 million, a deal known as the Alaska Purchase. Today, the two countries are separated by the Bering Strait, with Little Diomede Island belonging to the US and Big Diomede Island to Russia just 2.5 miles apart. While Russia has historical ties to Alaska, Putin said in 2014 that the state is “too cold” to reclaim. The incident comes as Trump prepares to meet Putin in Alaska for talks on Ukraine on Friday.
