Earthworm Jim Commercial 1994
Earthworm Jim is the protagonist of a video game series, an animated television series, a comic book mini-series, and an action figure line. He is an ordinary earthworm who, after a fateful encounter with a powerful "ultra-high-tech-indestructible-super-space-cyber-suit" that fell from space, gained superhuman abilities and transformed into a heroic figure.
The suit, originally intended for delivery by the bounty hunter Psy-Crow, merged with Jim and granted him the ability to operate like a human, with his worm body acting as a head and the suit as a body.
The original Earthworm Jim video game, released in October 1994 for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System, is a 2D sidescrolling platformer with run-and-gun elements.
Players control Jim as he navigates through surreal and bizarre levels, using his plasma blaster to shoot enemies or whipping his worm body to attack foes and swing from hooks.
The game features unique gameplay variations, including racing levels against Psy-Crow called "Andy Asteroids," underwater mazes, and levels requiring the player to escort a character named Peter Puppy without harming him.
The game's narrative is intentionally absurd, parodying typical video game tropes, such as the need to rescue a generic princess, who is ultimately crushed by a cow Jim launched into space at the beginning of the game.
The game was developed by Shiny Entertainment, with the original concept and character design by Douglas TenNapel, who also voiced the character.
Playmates Toys, inspired by the success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise and the Sonic the Hedgehog series, initiated the project as a video game-first franchise.
The game received critical acclaim upon release and spawned sequels, including Earthworm Jim 2 (1995) and Earthworm Jim 3D (2002), as well as a two-season animated television series.
A high-definition remake, Earthworm Jim HD, was released in 2010 for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, but its ports were removed from digital stores in 2018 after Gameloft's contract with Interplay ended.
An announcement for Earthworm Jim 4 was made in 2008, but development reportedly stalled and was believed cancelled by 2023.
