In 1886, the lens at Michigan’s Presque Isle Lighthouse got so hot from the sun’s magnified rays that it scorched the wooden floor inside the tower. The lighthouse keeper had to drape a blanket over it during the day to stop fires. It was bright enough to guide ships—and nearly burn down the lighthouse itself.
