Why I Don’t Rely on the CEO

If a company only works with a superstar CEO, I’m not interested. Warren Buffett says a truly wonderful company can survive—even with a lousy CEO—because the business is that good. Strong economics, a durable moat, and a simple model can carry it through bad leadership. CEOs don’t last forever, and eventually the right person will take over. That’s why I focus on the business first. Great management is a bonus, not the foundation. I want companies that thrive no matter who’s in charge.
