Ed’s Co-ed is a 1929 silent comedy-romance created entirely by University of Oregon students. Co-directed by Carvel Nelson and James Raley, the story focuses on Ed, a wholesome lumberjack who enters college and encounters the chaotic world of hazing, pranks, and campus life—challenging him to hold onto his moral principles amid new social pressures.

Born from the ambitious vision of student filmmakers, Nelson and Raley spearheaded the project. Their production was aided by technical director James McBride, who brought Hollywood cinematographic expertise to the campus shoot—thanks to a recommendation from Cecil B. DeMille.

Premiering in late 1929 (October 5 in the U.S.), the film runs approximately 84 minutes and embodies a light-hearted collegiate spirit, filled with camaraderie, youthful earnestness, and the charm of early student filmmaking.
