Why Principles, NOT Politics should be the basis of responses to Controversy (SNSY)

Far too often when controversy arises over actions taken by a political or ideological faction, the rebuttals or contrary perspectives put forward have significant issues of their own. Is this the result of politics dictating responses rather than principle? Why is this a huge roadblock to finding REAL solutions to the problems in the world today? Why are things which were done in the past not always worth preserving even if we must also reject the proposed replacement which is worse?
