Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in Newton Division.
On June 28, 2025, at around 10:50 p.m., Newton Gang Enforcement Detail uniformed officers were in the area of Avalon Boulevard and 42nd Place when they observed the suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Ismael Hernandez, walking in the roadway armed with a handgun. As the officers drove toward Hernandez, he raised the handgun and discharged two rounds and an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) occurred.
Hernandez was struck by gunfire and fell to the pavement. Officers rendered aid to Hernandez until the arrival of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) who transported him to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
A victim, who was involved in a physical altercation with Hernandez, prior to the OIS, was treated at scene by LAFD personnel for a minor injury. Force Investigation Division (FID) investigators determined Hernandez had threatened that victim and fired a handgun in his presence at the onset of the incident.
No officers or other community members were injured during this incident.
A blue steel, Rossi .38 Special revolver was recovered at scene and booked as evidence. The cylinder of the revolver contained five spent cartridge cases.
FID investigators responded to the scene and are investigating this incident
