Samurai Town Story II (浪人街 第二話), released in 1929, is the second chapter of Masahiro Makino’s landmark Rōnin-gai trilogy, one of the most influential works in early Japanese jidaigeki cinema. Building on the ensemble approach of the first film, it presents a vibrant portrait of life in an Edo-period samurai district, blending comedy, melodrama, and stylized swordplay. Makino’s rapid editing, dynamic camera work, and use of multiple intersecting storylines give the film an unusually modern rhythm for its era. While much of the trilogy has been lost, the surviving footage of Samurai Town Story II—running about 72 minutes—showcases Makino’s skill at orchestrating large casts and balancing everyday slice-of-life scenes with bursts of choreographed action. Its mix of humor, humanity, and spectacle cemented it as a foundational text in the evolution of Japanese period filmmaking.
