The Sixth Sense (El sexto sentido), completed in 1929, is an ambitious Spanish silent drama conceived by filmmaker Nemesio M. Sobrevila, with contributions from Eusebio Fernández Ardavín. The title plays on the metaphor of cinema as a “sixth sense,” suggesting that film can reveal truths and emotional realities beyond the reach of ordinary human perception. Blending narrative melodrama with experimental flourishes, the story follows Kamus, a philosopher and photographer, who uses his camera to expose hidden aspects of human relationships. The film reflects the influence of French Impressionist cinema and German Expressionism, incorporating stylized lighting, symbolic imagery, and subjective camera work. Although The Sixth Sense had only limited screenings and did not receive wide theatrical distribution, it is now recognized as an important and rare example of avant-garde Spanish cinema at the end of the silent era, preserved by the Filmoteca Española.
