Rafael Collado, a migrant detained in Florida’s Everglades, recently told his fiancée that it floods when it rains, mosquitoes swarm, temperatures swing from sweltering heat to freezing cold, and medical care is limited. He tells her, “It's like you're dead alive.”
Attorneys say detainees face no private calls, overflowing bathrooms, and ignored medical requests—calling it “bordering on extreme mistreatment.” A judge halted further construction, but thousands can still be held there.
