👇 By Dawn’s Early Light is a 1990 HBO made-for-TV Cold War thriller based on the novel Trinity’s Child by William Prochnau. It’s set in an alternate near-future (from the 1990 perspective) where the United States and Soviet Union are still locked in nuclear brinkmanship.

Plot Summary
The story begins when a rogue faction within the Soviet military launches a nuclear missile strike on the USSR itself, making it appear as if the attack came from the United States. The goal is to trick Soviet leadership into retaliating, thereby forcing a full-scale nuclear exchange that would destroy the U.S. but also purge their own political rivals. The Soviet high command, believing they are under American attack, launches a counterstrike against the U.S.

The U.S. President (Martin Landau) is hustled into Air Force One and faces an impossible decision: retaliate with a full nuclear strike or attempt a limited counterstrike to avoid total annihilation. Communication lines with the military begin to fail, and command-and-control becomes fragmented. A B-52 bomber crew (led by Powers Boothe and Rebecca De Mornay) receives “go codes” for a nuclear attack, but as the situation unravels, they are forced to question the legitimacy and morality of their orders.

The tension centers on whether cooler heads can prevail before the escalating tit-for-tat launches spiral into a doomsday scenario. The title comes from the opening line of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” underscoring the theme of America’s survival hanging in the balance.
