Gold Bar Tariff Shock, Bitcoin's Privacy Issues, & Investor Protection | The Gold Spot

At the end of last week, a leaked Customs and Border Protection email to a Swiss precious metals refiner indicated that some gold bullion bars would face a steep import tax under President Trump’s latest trade onslaught.

Although the Trump administration denied the report the next day, gold prices swung sharply as investors’ worst fears were realized. This temporary volatility has reignited comparisons between the precious metal and Bitcoin, yet many experts warn against the conflation.

In reality, President Trump’s move to boost cryptocurrency adoption by repealing safeguards, expanding its use in banking, and allowing it in 401(k) plans has eroded Bitcoin’s original selling points, such as decentralization and privacy.

Now, gold and Bitcoin differ greatly in volatility, privacy, and lasting value, despite frequent comparisons. While the former is a reliable protection against government overreach, the latter is quickly becoming a preferred mechanism for it.

In China, the central bank has merged cryptocurrency concepts with its central bank digital currency (CBDC) to monitor purchases and impose spending deadlines. Similar conditions could emerge in the US as government partnerships with major tech firms and advances in AI increase the ability to track financial transactions and consumer behavior.
