On Monday, President Trump invoked emergency powers under Section 740 - a rarely used provision in D.C. law - federalized the Metropolitan Police, deployed 800 National Guard troops, and appointed DEA head Terry Cole as Emergency Police Commissioner under AG Pam Bondi.
4 days later, D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit, calling it a “brazenly unlawful assault on Home Rule. The lawsuit claimed it was an unprecedented federal overreach.
Facing this legal pushback, the administration shifted course. In a new agreement, Pamela Smith remains in her role. However, D.C. police are now required to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.”
