Nathan Sales on No Ceasefire Talks from the Alaska Summit: No Surprises There, ‘Putin Is a Trained KGB Spy,’ This Is His Bread and Butter

If you look at Vladimir Putin’s statement, there is a couple reasons to be concerned about his willingness to seriously consider ending the war. First of all, there is no cease-fire, if there had ban cease-fire, which the Ukrainians have agreed to months ago, and which Putin is tapping us along about. If we this that, they would have announced it, they didn’t, so still a lot of work to be done there. Also, pay attention to how Putin described how the war started. Is he talking about Russian security interest and root causes. Let’s be clear, the root cause of this war is Vladimir Putin. He could end it today if he wanted to, he doesn’t want to because he thinks he can win it on the ground. What his goal is to take back all of Ukraine’s sovereign and independent state and why does that matter? Because, if you don’t have Ukraine, you don’t have a Russian empire. And that’s Putin’s end game. He wants to reconstitute the Soviet or czarist empire. The collapse of which he had said was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century. He still thinks that he is going to keep fighting, I’m afraid.”
