Israel Tried to Crush Palestine - And Made Apartheid History Instead

The arrogance of two Israeli ministers has just provided irrefutable evidence for their own prosecutions for the crime of apartheid.

Right, so most politicians guilty of wrongdoing spend years trying to dodge prosecutors; however Israel’s far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich appear determined to gift-wrap the evidence for them. In the very week the International Criminal Court was revealed to have drafted apartheid charges against them, Ben-Gvir swaggered into a prison cell to bully the most famous Palestinian prisoner alive, while Smotrich boasted that he would “bury the West Bank” before the world could recognize a Palestinian state.

For men already staring down allegations of crimes against humanity, it was the diplomatic equivalent of turning up to court with blood literally still dripping from their hands. What they thought was defiance looked, to much of the world, like confession.

With those reports confirmed that the International Criminal Court had prepared arrest warrants for Ben-Gvir and Smotrich on the charge of apartheid, the first time in history such a prosecution has not only been contemplated for Israeli leaders, but to anyone ever. That alone would have been extraordinary enough.

But when the two ministers then acted out their own arrogance on the world stage, they may have handed prosecutors precisely what they needed: clear, attributable proof of intent to dominate. The question is no longer simply whether Israel can be accused of apartheid. It is whether its own ministers have just demonstrated it beyond denial.

Right, so the ICC’s drafting of arrest warrants, combined with the self-incriminating behavior of these two ministers, has profoundly altered the debate about Israel and apartheid. It is no longer merely a question of whether international NGOs or Palestinian activists can convince the world that Israel is an apartheid state.
