How the Defense System Works

When the colony detects a disturbance—such as tapping, breaching the nest, or an intruder—soldier termites respond by rapidly banging or rattling their heads against the surrounding substrate (like wood, soil, or tunnel walls). This head-banging occurs at a rate of about 11 times per second, generating vibrations that travel through the colony's structure.

Purpose and Effects:
Internal Alert: The vibrations act as an alarm signal, recruiting more soldiers for defense and alerting worker termites to repair any damage or seal breaches in the nest.

Deterrence: Collectively, the noise and vibrations create a "ripple of sound" that can mimic the presence of something larger and more threatening, potentially scaring off predators.
