Sheriff on Brady List? Why most people don’t know, and why they should

You probably pay attention when a sheriff wins an election, or when some local official does something extraordinary. But what if that same sheriff was quietly placed on a Brady List, labeling him as untrustworthy? That’s exactly what happened to Deschutes County Sheriff Kent van der Kamp. A district attorney found he repeatedly lied under oath about his education and work history, placing him on a list prosecutors ethically cannot trust in court.

This isn’t just a development for law nerds, it’s a warning sign for every citizen who trusts the criminal justice system. The Brady List, mandated by Brady v. Maryland (1963), requires prosecutors to disclose officers whose credibility is in question, which could tilt the scales of justice if kept hidden.
