Solving Cold Cases With Pollen: Microscopic Forensics
The article describes the growing field of forensic palynology, which uses pollen and spores as evidence in criminal investigations. In 2018, a decades-old Australian murder was solved through pollen analysis found on the victim's clothing. Pollen is ideal forensic evidence because it's microscopic, nearly indestructible, geographically specific, and ubiquitous - humans collect thousands of pollen grains daily on clothing and possessions. Modern forensic palynology employs sophisticated techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy, flow cytometry, DNA metabarcoding, and isotope analysis, to accurately identify pollen. New Zealand leads globally in this field, with applications extending beyond criminal cases to wildlife trafficking investigations, food authentication, historical mysteries, counterterrorism, and environmental litigation. Despite its potential, challenges include the scarcity of trained experts, time-consuming analysis, and occasional legal skepticism. However, emerging technologies like machine learning and portable DNA sequencers promise to make the field more accessible.
