stone by stone, the road unwinds
past the hedgerows, past the signs
a stranger’s face, a nod, a grin
another day, i’m moving in

i left the town before first light
boots still damp from the rain last night
the baker’s boy was sweeping in
he waved me on with a flour-stained grin

the fields rolled out in a patchwork hue
a woman called, “there’s a pot for you”
her kettle hummed, her stories ran
of the land she loved, and the son she’d planned

and i go where the road will bend
through a gate, to a turn, to a lane’s dead end
if i find one place that feels like mine
i’ll lay my coat, i’ll stop in time

in carrick town, i shared a meal
with a mason’s hand and a gambler’s deal
they spoke of floods and winters hard
and the stories they kept in their own backyards

a blacksmith’s forge lit the dusk in red
he swore the hills would keep me fed
but i kept on while the stars came out
with a tune in my step and a mind full of doubt

each roof i’ve passed has a fire inside
each voice i’ve met holds a piece of pride
but a home’s not given, it’s slowly earned
in the place where your feet decide to turn

and i go where the road will bend
through a gate, to a turn, to a lane’s dead end
if i find one place that feels like mine
i’ll lay my coat, i’ll stop in time

stone by stone, the road unwinds
and waits for me, when i change my mind
