If the Russians take Kramatorsk, essentially the entire Donbass will be in their hands. They are currently quite far from this goal, but they are trying to advance north during their unexpected attack. This is not a very powerful strike—they used the so-called light infantry tactic: small groups of soldiers, some on bicycles and motorcycles, some on foot, went as far as possible in small units. They managed to advance quite far, about 15–20 km, which in the context of this war is an impressive distance. If they can hold these positions, they will indeed be in a position to threaten the major defensive lines that the Ukrainians have in this area. The Ukrainians are certainly trying to resist this.

Obviously, all this is calculated to change the situation on the front before the meeting in Alaska. After all, if Putin can say: "Look, I have almost taken Donbass anyway, or we have already started an offensive that will bring us Donbass in a month, so why not give it up now and thus stop the bloodshed," this will give him exactly the argument he needs.
