Trump Puts Green Card Holders Under Strict "Moral Character" US Citizenship Review | Spotlight | N18G

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued new rules tightening scrutiny on applicants. Green card holders, typically eligible after three to five years, must not only pass English and civics tests but also demonstrate an expanded purview of the existing "good moral character." Under the new guidance, officers are instructed to conduct a holistic assessment that goes beyond criminal records. Positive contributions such as community service, caregiving, stable employment, and paying taxes will be weighed. Even behaviours that aren't strictly illegal could signal a lack of civic responsibility. The memo also emphasises rehabilitation, allowing compliance with probation, overdue taxes, or letters of support to mitigate concerns. With over 800,000 people naturalised in 2024 alone, these stricter standards could reshape the process for future applicants, particularly from countries like India and China. The Trump administration says the changes aim to restore integrity to the naturalisation process.
