Applegreen, the company operating rest stops along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, has implemented a new system where tips are intended to replace a portion of employee wages.
This change affects workers at all 17 plaza locations. Under the new system, workers hired after August 3rd will have a base hourly rate of $11, with tips expected to make up the difference from the previous $14 hourly rate.
If tips do not cover the gap,
Applegreen will reportedly cover the difference.
Some employees are concerned this change will lead to lower overall compensation.

Applegreen is a multinational corporation that manages all 17 rest plazas along the toll road, including those in Dauphin and Cumberland counties.

Those plazas house popular chain brands like Chick-fil-A, Burger King and Starbucks.

They're also majority-owned by Blackstone, a large U.S.-based alternative asset manager.
