On Jan. 7, 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge, PFC Roland Bragg was captured by German forces but a surprising bond with one of his captors gave him a chance to escape. With enemy fire all around, Bragg commandeered a German ambulance carrying four wounded Americans and drove it over 20 miles to safety through a war zone. He was fired on by both German and American forces, but he never stopped. Nearly 50 years later, one of the wounded soldiers he saved tracked him down to say thank you.
For his extraordinary bravery, Bragg was awarded the Silver Star.
In 2025, Fort Bragg was renamed in his honor.
