Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old Indian national and truck driver, faces three counts of vehicular homicide and deportation following a deadly crash on Florida’s Turnpike near Fort Pierce on August 12, 2025. Singh, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2018, allegedly attempted an unauthorized U-turn in a semi-truck, causing a minivan to collide with the trailer, killing all three occupants: a 37-year-old woman from Pompano Beach, a 30-year-old man from Florida City, and a 54-year-old man from Miami. The incident, captured on dashcam, showed Singh’s trailer blocking all lanes, leaving the minivan no chance to avoid impact.

Post-crash, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) assessed Singh’s English proficiency and road sign knowledge. He correctly answered only 2 of 12 English questions and identified just one of four common highway signs, raising concerns about his qualifications. Despite this, Singh held commercial driver’s licenses from California and Washington, sparking debate over licensing standards and immigration enforcement.

Singh crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in 2018, was detained, and released on a $5,000 bond after claiming fear of persecution in India. His work permit was denied under the Trump administration in 2020 but approved under Biden in 2021, allowing him to work as a truck driver. The crash has fueled political controversy, with the Trump administration and Department of Homeland Security criticizing California’s licensing policies under Governor Gavin Newsom, while Newsom’s office countered that Singh’s initial entry occurred during Trump’s presidency.

Singh, arrested in Stockton, California, on August 16, faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted. An ICE detainer ensures he remains in custody, with deportation likely after his state charges.
