A Liberian cargo ship, the W-Sapphire, caught fire and exploded Monday evening in Baltimore Harbor, near the site of last year’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

The blast sent black smoke into the air, but all 23 crew members and two pilots were reported safe, with no injuries or property damage.

Fireboats contained the incident, and the ship remains afloat while the Coast Guard investigates, WTOP News has reported.

The explosion occurred close to the ongoing recovery zone of the collapsed Key Bridge, which killed six workers in March 2024 and is slated for rebuilding by 2028.
