In the recent Patriot Outreach segment, Colonel Tony Monaco and Chaplain Lard “Chap” Thompson discussed the urgent need to identify signs of distress related to suicidality. Over his 26 years in the Army, Colonel Monaco witnessed the suicides of 15 soldiers and 30 veterans, underscoring the importance of recognizing distress signals to intervene effectively. He shared that he assisted with 11 suicide cases in the past month alone, highlighting a worrying trend. Common signs of distress include feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and overwhelming anger, along with behavioral changes such as withdrawal from social circles, making plans to die, or risky behavior. The loss of a primary love relationship is identified as the leading cause of distress. Understanding these signs is crucial for providing support and intervention for those in need.
