SNAKES ! Is Australia Really That Dangerous?

Snakes are often viewed with fear, but serious incidents involving them are relatively uncommon—particularly in Australia, where awareness and access to medical care are high. While Australia is home to some of the world’s most venomous snakes, most species are non-aggressive and will avoid humans when given the chance. Snakebites are rare, and thanks to effective first-aid practices and widely available antivenom, fatalities are extremely rare. Snakes use their venom primarily for hunting, not defense, and bites typically occur only when they are accidentally provoked or threatened. With a basic level of caution—such as watching where you step or keeping campsites tidy—living around snakes is far more about respect and understanding than fear.
