Gen Z: Their Unique Challenges and Winning Characteristics

What do you know about the Zoomer generation, or Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012? You might know someone born in this generation—maybe you, your child, or a grandchild. Are they getting a bad rap? Sources, even Gen Z sources, say their peers are the hardest to work with and have a tendency to bend the rules. They just don’t know how to communicate, they don’t know how to meet people or go on dates, and they would rather spend time on their phone than in the real world. Is this true? Is there hope? Companies, frustrated by "quiet quitting" and "workplace cheating," are leaning toward hiring millennials instead.

At the same time, however, the Pentagon is working to reform its hiring practices to attract younger talent, while Gen Z influencers are showing gratitude to President Donald Trump for saving TikTok.

Outside of work, they’re redefining social norms: drinking less post-pandemic, turning to astrology for stress relief, and debating whether the retirement age should be lowered. Meanwhile, financial stress and burnout are hitting this generation hard, with some already feeling like they’re in an early midlife crisis. Are they misunderstood trailblazers or simply a challenge for the modern workplace? It depends on who you ask.
