Delta Force was established on November 19, 1977, by Colonel Charles A. Beckwith, a Green Beret and Vietnam War veteran who served with the British 22 Special Air Service (SAS) during the Malayan Emergency (1963-66). Inspired by the SAS, Beckwith recognized the need for a dedicated U.S. counterterrorism unit to address the growing global terrorist threat in the 1970s, exemplified by incidents like the Munich Olympics massacre.
