Road Trip #1142 - US Highway 1 North - Florida Mile 91-101 | Tavernier / Key Largo Pt 1

Today we roll north on US Highway 1 from mile 91 to mile 101, beginning in Tavernier on the southern end of Key Largo. Tavernier is an unincorporated Monroe County community with services along the highway, Mariners Hospital nearby, and the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center just off US-1. There’s a short stretch here where the northbound and southbound lanes split wide, starting with a wooded median and then a few businesses set between the roadways. We continue into Key Largo, also unincorporated, long known as the Diving Capital of the World with ties to Bogie and Bacall through the 1948 film “Key Largo,” the bayside Caribbean Club, and the original African Queen boat running canal cruises out of Port Largo. In central Key Largo the lanes separate again for a longer run with a deep green median that transitions into a center business strip before rejoining. Segment ends at mile 101. U.S. Highway 1 is the longest north–south road in the United States, stretching over 2,300 miles from Key West, Florida to Fort Kent, Maine. In Florida, US-1 serves as a major coastal route, running parallel to the Atlantic Ocean and connecting a wide range of communities from the tropical islands of the Florida Keys to the urban centers of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, then continuing north through the Space Coast, historic St. Augustine, and into Jacksonville before crossing into Georgia.
