Stage 5 famine is devastating large parts of Gaza, where children and women suffer severe food shortages due to the ongoing siege and military operations.
The health condition of 9-year-old Maryam, who weighs less than a third of the normal weight for her age, reflects the impact of famine and the harsh blockade turning residents’ lives into daily suffering.
Human rights reports confirm a deliberate policy of starving the population, leading to deaths from severe malnutrition and the spread of diseases.
This unprecedented humanitarian crisis sounds the alarm and demands urgent global action to save what can be saved.

Al Jazeera’s Ibrahim Al Khalili reports.

The UN deputy chief for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher says the famine could have been prevented, had Israel allowed aid into Gaza.

Palestinians are facing a choice of death or displacement - as Israel starts the first phase of its assault to seize Gaza City, and expel one million people.
The UN says the systematic destruction of the Strip's most populated city, is already underway.

Al Jazeera’s Caley Callahan reports.

Israel has intensified its assault on Gaza City, launching a new operation to seize it while planning the forced displacement of nearly one million Palestinians to southern zones.
For residents, constant movement is now the norm, with many refusing to flee again, stating “displacement is death” and vowing to face danger with honor next to their homes.
Nowhere is safe, as even designated “safe” areas like displacement camps in Deir el-Balah are bombed, destroying tents and meager belongings.
Survival is a daily struggle against Israeli strikes, starvation, and the trauma of endless flight, leaving Palestinians exhausted and with nowhere left to go.
The situation across the strip has become unbearable, with safety merely an illusion.
At least 40 Palestinians have been killed across Gaza on Thursday August 21, 2025.
