When it came to slavery, Lincoln saw it as the defining issue of his moral compass. He said if his name ever went into history, it would be for the Emancipation Proclamation—his whole soul was in it. Lincoln even admitted he made vows to Almighty God, believing the Lord heard his prayers. After Antietam, he saw God’s hand in giving the North a victory, even though it was squandered by McClellan’s timidity.
