Brits Try American Banana Cream Pie for the First Time… and Then BABY ARRIVES! 👶🥧

A wholesome British family takes on a classic American Banana Cream Pie for the very first time — and halfway through, Nakita goes into labour (yes, really… “Uhh, this just happened”). The bake turns into a beautiful, real-life moment as we welcome our newborn daughter, Alissa H, and Elana joins Dad (David/Mr H) for the sweetest taste test ever.

Our Banana Cream Pie (First-Timer Notes)

Custard: whole milk, sugar, cornflour/cornstarch, egg yolks, butter, vanilla → temper slowly for silk.

Bananas: slice, toss lightly with lemon to slow browning.

Crust: we went pastry here (trad), but we’re dying to try a graham cracker crust next time.

Topping: whipped double cream + icing/confectioners’ sugar + vanilla (soft peaks).

Chill: minimum 4 hours (overnight gives those tidy café slices).

Q: Banana Cream Pie vs Banoffee Pie — what’s the difference?
A: Banana Cream Pie = pastry/graham crust + banana slices + custard + whipped cream. Banoffee Pie = biscuit/graham crust + toffee/dulce de leche + bananas + whipped cream (no custard).

Q: Can I use Digestives instead of Grahams?
A: Yes. 300g crushed Digestives + 120g melted butter + pinch of salt = great no-bake base.

Q: How do I stop bananas going brown?
A: Light lemon juice toss, assemble close to serving, and cover the pie well during chilling.
